Vic: Man who had woman s body in car boot gets bail

By Catherine Chisholm

MELBOURNE, Dec 10 AAP - A man charged over the death of a woman found in a car boot
told a Melbourne court today he wanted to face up to what had happened.

Gabriel Omar Chang, 31, of Melton, is charged with the manslaughter of Dianne Psaila
(Psaila), 27, of St Albans on November 8 this year.

Detective Senior Constable Stuart Bateson told the Melbourne Magistrates Court that
Chang and Psaila were two old school friends and she had gone to his house to borrow money
for drugs.

He said that Ms Psaila had started hitting Chang and Chang had then hit her, causing
her to fall and hit her head on the couch.

Chang had checked Ms Psaila's pulse and had found none, and had then wrapped her head
in a jumper, Det. Bateson said.

Chang had been uncertain about what had happened, so he had kicked her and hit her
in the head with a meat tenderiser.

Chang had then put Ms Psaila's body into the boot of her car and had driven it to a
friend's place, where it had stayed in the garage until November 12, Det, Bateson said.

He had then broken into Ms Psaila's house and had stolen $1,300, and had also stolen
cannabis from a drug dealer to help him in his life on the run, the court was told.

Police allegedly found Chang digging a grave in bushland near the holiday town of Lorne
on November 12.

Chang, who was born in Chile, told the court he wanted to face up to what had happened.

His brother, Sergio, said their family was a close one and Chang would not put their
parents through any more shame by fleeing.

Mick Jones, prosecuting, said that instead of calling an ambulance, Chang had been
preparing to conceal the body permanently and live a life on the run.

Chang also faces charges of assault, burglary, theft and possessing a drug of dependence.

His family members cried and embraced as Magistrate Wendy Wilmoth granted bail with
a $50,000 surety, on condition that he report to police three times a week, not apply
for a passport and undergo psychological counselling as necessary.

Chang was remanded to reappear on February 17 in Melbourne Magistrates Court.

He has not been required to enter a plea.
