SA: Australian law firm to reshape PNG mining laws
ADELAIDE, Aug 28 AAP - An Australian law firm has won a three-year $1.7 million contractto review and develop mining laws in Papua New Guinea.
Adelaide firm Johnson Winter & Slattery today announced it had won the contract, sponsoredby the World Bank's International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, against a fieldof international bidders.
Under the project the firm would review and upgrade PNG's existing mining laws anddraft new mining occupational health and safety legislation.
It would also prepare laws governing mine closure and rehabilitation, offshore miningprojects and a new standard Mining Development Contract to govern mineral projects.
Johnson Winter and Slattery partner Paul Turner, who will head a 12-person team tomanage the contract, said the firm would develop systems to ensure that private investmentsin the country's resources were sustainable on technical, social and environmental issues.
"The project is designed to create a new and more robust regulatory environment forresource development in Papua New Guinea," Mr Turner said.
"It is not designed to trigger a new wave of development but to ensure that it is fairfor all stakeholders when it happens."
